John Tonz

Tonz, John
5/5/ 1931- 1/21/2013. This loving but no nonsense family man will be greatly missed by his children, their spouses, and grandchildren. He has shaped the lives of Ginny Trimble (Doug), Laura Folsom (Dave) and Dan Tonz (Tami), thirteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren, Judy Tonz and his brother Tony Tonz. The son of Yugoslavian immigrants, John grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he excelled in academics and sports at Boys Tech. Upon graduation he received a football scholarship to the University of Arizona and headed West. In 1954 he graduated and turned down offers to play professional football, instead choosing to enter the United States Air Force looking for a stable future. This decorated career military war veteran served his country for 21 years retiring as a USAF Colonel, always setting the bar of achievement high. He and his family traveled and lived in many places throughout the world. After he retired he returned to live in Tucson, Arizona where he enjoyed many years of keeping the clock at basketball and football games for his alma-mater U of A. His second career at Portland Cement continued to keep him busy for many years to come. A grandpa who was always tough on the grandsons and soft on the granddaughters set high expectations for us all and was often tasked with
bringing us the voice of reason during everyday life situations. This amazing man is now looking down at us continuing to guide us through honesty, integrity and reason that will be with us forever.
