Joseph M. Forster Lt. Col.

Forster, Joseph M. Lt. Col. (Ret)
93, passed away on April 18, 2013. He was born on October 25, 1919 in Gainesville, Florida. He graduated from Gainesville High School and attended the University of Florida before entering the Army Air Corps in 1940. During WWII Joe flew the P-38 Fighter becoming an Ace accredited with 9 victories completing 155 combat missions with the 475th Fighter Group. Highly decorated, his honors include the Silver Star and Distinguished Flying Cross with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters. His Air Force career included tours in Korea, Germany and flying combat in Vietnam. He proudly served his country for 30 years retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1971. In 1972, Joe began his second career with the City of Phoenix Building Department, retiring a second time in 1990. He was married for 66 years to Janis M. Fischer. Joe is survived by their 3 children Paula F. (Preble) Ware, Jody Forster, and Dana L. (John) Shipley. He is also survived by three grandchildren Sheridan McAtee, Pi Ware and Mateja Shipley. The family would like to express our deepest gratitude to all the staff of Friendship Village Health Care Center (Memory Care & Genesis) for the compassionate care he received during the last year. We especially thank private caregivers Reinicka, Pam and Candy for all their tireless efforts on Joe's behalf. Inurnment service with full military honors will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, April 30, at the National Memorial Cemetery 23029 N. Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, AZ.
