Martin L. Block M.D.CPC

Block, Martin L., M.D. CPC
62 of Scottsdale, Arizona passed away on October 28, 2013. Marty was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandpa and uncle. Marty graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Science, from the Honors Program in Medical Education in 1971. In 1975 he graduated from Northwestern University Medical School with a Doctor of Medicine degree. Marty completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1978. He began his private practice in Riverside, California, where he was active in the medical community. Marty's dedication to medicine and the importance of quality patient care led him to become involved with administrative medicine early on in his career. As a medical executive for FHP, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Cigna, Aetna, Schaller Anderson, Inspiris and United Healthcare, Marty wore many hats, starting as a medical director, leading to chief medical officer, and completing his career as a medical director and vice president of clinical services at United Healthcare-Optum. He was continuously focused on quality of care, utilization, working with government programs as well as risk adjustment. Marty worked with passion. He was never satisfied, and endured long hours every day in order to improve processes and find a better way to do things. He received many awards throughout his career because of this dedication to his work and to healthcare in general. Marty did have one vice, and that was flying his airplane. He received his pilot's license at age 24 and owned numerous planes throughout his lifetime. Flying brought so much joy to his life, you could count on a smile being on his face when he landed. Marty carried his passion from his work to his flying but nothing made him prouder than watching his three children grow up and achieve their own individual successes. He will always be watching over them and smiling proudly, as only a dad can do. Marty touched so many lives with his crazy dry wit, charm and personality. Once you met him you would never forget him; he was as unique as anyone could be, and that is why he was loved by many.Marty was preceded in death by his father, Julius Block. Marty is survived by his mother, Mildred; bff and wife of 20 years, Rita; children, Jeffrey (Jamie), Gregg, and Abbey; his beautiful granddaughter, Kayna; sister, Gita (Lee), brother, Ron; and dearly loved dog and constant companion, Joey. A Celebration of Marty's Life will be held at La Casa de Cristo Lutheran Church, 6300 E Bell Rd. Scottsdale, AZ at 3PM, Monday, November 4.
