Thompson, Melvin E. Sr.
Melvin E. Thompson Sr., 80 passed away with his wife by his side on December 22, 2012 in Phoenix, AZ. He was born 3-16-32 in Carbondale, Illinois. He enlisted in the US Army at an early age. He was based in Japan before the Korean conflict. He was also a part of the cleanup in Germany. Melvin fought in the Korean War, unit 187, the first outfit unit in Korea in 1950. He received a Purple Heart along with many other military medals. He was listed in the US Army history as the youngest Colonel at the age of 20. He belonged to the DAV, NRA, VFW, college Republican, and SLADD (in honor of Sonia). He worked with young adults and families with drug and alcohol problems throughout his life. He also worked in many areas of the medical field. He loved his family and would help anyone in need. He will be missed. Melvin Sr. is survived by his wife of 53 years Irene, children Nancy Jean, Kathy, Wayne, Denise, Melvin Jr., Thomas, Irving, Sonia, Irene Jr., Russell, Ronnie, 22 grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his mother, father, sister, brother, daughter Sonia Lee (1986), and first wife (1951). A memorial visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at Greer Wilson Funeral Chapel, 5921 W. Thomas Rd. Phoenix, AZ. An official Military Honor Service will follow at 2:30 pm on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 North Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, AZ.
