Phyllis St. John

Phyllis St. John, born Phyllis LeGro in Ponca, NE, August 31, 1916 died Saturday January 5, 2013. She was raised in Seattle WA where she studied nursing at the University of Washington, graduated with a B.S. in Nursing in 1938. Phyllis was employed as a nurse at the University hospital immediately after graduation and within a year was promoted to head nurse of both the nursery and the delivery room. In 1940 Phyllis married Robert D. St. John. In 1942 she gave birth to son Dennis, and in 1944 to a daughter Joy. In 1948 the family moved to Glendale Az and Phyllis began work at Maricopa Medical Center where she established the hospital's first OB/GYN service. She later served as a nurse for a family practice. Bob and Phyllis retired in 1978 and moved to Black Canyon City. She was preceded in death by her husband Bob, brothers Keith, Freeman and Denny LeGro. She is survived by her son Dennis, daughter Joy Alba, sister Nita Marsula, granddaughters Tamie Harvey and Heather Weech and five great-grandchildren. Phyllis loved her work, serving others, spending time with friends and family, and a good joke. Private services and ashes scattering pending in Walker Az.
