Flinn, Richard Patrick (Pat)
Richard Patrick Flinn (Pat), was born on May 20, 1943 in Everett, Washington to Marvin H. and Erma (nee Green) Flinn. The son of an Air Force Chief Master Sergeant, he grew up and lived all over the U.S. as well as in Japan for two years. He graduated from Air Academy High School in Colorado Springs, CO where he excelled as an athlete in basketball, track and was the captain of the football team. Upon graduation he served his country in the U.S. Air Force
for seven-and-a-half years where his aptitude for mechanics was recognized and put to work on the B-58 "Hustler" bombers. In 1965, while stationed at present day Grissom AFB, Indiana, he met and married Janice (nee Pressler), his wife of 48 years. After his honorable discharge from the U.S. Air Force as a Staff Sergeant, he and Jan settled in Phoenix, AZ in 1971. He joined the Phoenix Police Department in 1975, working patrol for the majority of his career and until his retirement in 2006. Pat worked tirelessly serving and protecting the citizens of the city of Phoenix. In 1994, he was awarded the Medal of Valor for his heroism during a foot pursuit in which the suspect attempted to shoot both Pat and a fellow officer. His brave response is credited for saving both his and the fellow officer's lives. Pat's many interests included a love of flying (he was a FAA certified Private Pilot), working on cars, sports (namely football and baseball) and spending time with his family. Always putting others before himself, he will be remembered for his hard work ethic, integrity, his giving, loving nature, hardy laugh and his talent for storytelling. He was surrounded by his family when he passed away on July 2, 2013. He is the hero of our hearts and will be dearly missed. Pat is survived by his wife Jan, son Daniel (wife Elena), grand-daughter Anastasiya, daughter Jennifer von Sehlen (husband Volkmar), father Marvin, sisters Sandie Browning and Wendy Cherrie, brothers Mach and Alan, as well as a very special nephew, Sean Harmon.
