Whiting, Robert Calvin
of Scottsdale, Arizona, passed away on September 10, 2013, at the age of 88 following a brief stay at the Belmont Village Senior Living Center in Scottsdale. Bob was born in Oak Park, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, in 1924, and grew up in north suburban Evanston, where he graduated from Evanston Township High School. Like many of his generation, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army
Air Corps shortly after his 18th birthday and served for more than three years during World War II
. After the war, Bob attended Northwestern University
graduating with a degree in Business Administration. While at Northwestern, he was a member of Beta Theta Phi fraternity. After graduating from college, he married the love of his life, Barbara Carolyn Murphy, and they remained happily married for more than six decades. Bob had a successful business career with IBM and later served as a senior officer of First Illinois Bank in Evanston. As an alumnus of Northwestern, Bob was active in the John Evans Club and loved to attend Northwestern football games even during those difficult years when his beloved Wildcats regularly finished at the bottom of the Big Ten. Bob also served at various times as President of the University Club of Evanston and as Chairman of the Board of the Salvation Army of Evanston. After retiring from First Illinois Bank, Bob and Barbara relocated to Scottsdale, where his three daughters also currently live. Bob was a long-time member of Paradise Valley Country Club and loved to spend time there with family and friends. He and Barbara also loved to travel and made several trips to Europe and Asia, including a very memorable trip to Russia and the Scandinavian countries with their daughters. Bob was both a kind-hearted person and an engaging conversationalist. He had a wide range of interests and an encyclopedic knowledge of many subjects, and he took great delight in meeting new friends and conversing with them. Even as he lost his physical health, he never lost his passionate interest in the lives of his children, grandchildren, and many friends both in Chicago and in Arizona. Bob is survived by his wife, Barbara; his daughters, Marilyn, Nancy, and Carol; and his six grandchildren. In his usual modest way, Bob asked that there be no memorial service for him after his death. However, he and Barbara have established a fund at Valley Presbyterian Church called the Whiting Family Christian Education Fund, and contributions to the fund in his memory would be greatly appreciated. Checks should be made payable to the Fund and addressed to Valley Presbyterian Church, 6947 East McDonald Drive, Paradise Valley, AZ 85253.
