William W. Porter Jr.

Porter, William W. Jr. ("Woody")
67, lost his battle with cancer on April 27, 2013. Woody was born in South Gate, California to Kathryn and the late William W. Porter, Sr. He came to Phoenix as an infant. He attended Madison 1 and 2 Elementary School and graduated from Central High School in 1963. He graduated from the Arizona State University in 1967. As a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, was awarded a purple heart, bronze star and a silver star for gallantry in action. Woody married Barbara Lynn Reese in 1971. He enjoyed a 34 year career with IBM. During that time, he resided in Atlanta, Kansas City, San Antonio, Germany and Green Bay before finally retiring in Phoenix. While his children were growing up, he spent countless hours attending their swim meets, track meets and cross country meets. He loved to cheer them and their teammates on to victory. He also loved to travel with his wife, walk his dogs, shoot photography and play golf. Woody is survived by his wife, Barbara, children Kathryn Porter Canale and William Woodson Porter, III and his mother, Kathryn F. Porter. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. at Best Funeral Services located at 9380 W. Peoria Ave., Peoria, Arizona on Friday, May 10, 2013. Internment of his ashes will take place at 10:00 a.m. on June 3, 2013 at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma, California.
