Last year the Syracuse Alumni Club of Arizona had the great fortune of meeting George. He came to many of our basketball game watch events, and was one of our best fans. We enjoyed hearing about the beginnngs of his news career which began when he was the Editor of the Daily Orange student newspaper at Syracuse University and that Eileen was the Editor the next year. The stories were fascinating. George was a most distinguished alum. We know he will be cheering with us in spirit. Our condolences go to his entire family, and Eileen knows that she has "extended" family as a member of our alumni club.

Eileen,
We were so sorry to learn of George's death. As you know, we give George all the credit for hiring us both at the St. Joseph News-Press 20 years ago and bringing us together. We have three kids, a mortgage, car payments -- all thanks to George's wisdom and foresight.
We were so happy to learn that his book will be coming out this spring. We look forward to reading it and hope to connect with you on our trip to Missouri this summer.
Again, our deepest sympathy.
Best,
Greg and Mary Divine Myers

Many journalists would have been content to rest on their considerable laurels after a distinguished, much-honored career like George's in Milwaukee. But George took his considerable gifts into academia, and later to Missouri, were we first met. The lasting impression of George was his essential decency and his commitment to the highest quality journalism, without fear of favor, always on the side of the public's right to know. God bless you, George, and may Eileen and the family be comforted in the fact that George made a difference. The readers he so faithfully served are richer for his life and many contributions.

George was a professor of mine at UWM in the '60s. His passion for comics created a strong bond between us, and after graduation he gave me some of my earliest cartooning gigs at the Milwaukee Journal/Insight I will always be grateful for his encouragement and inspiration. George was a wonderful guy on so many levels.

Eileen -- So many thoughts and memories. Chiefly they revolve around his great enthusiasm for his family, his work, his city, his state, his country. And, of course, for the Boy Scouts of America. It was an enthusiasm I have never seen fully matched by anyone I've known. That enthusiasm and joy was a gift to everyone who knew him. Much love from both of us. -- Mike and Sandy

Eileen and family: You are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. George was one of the giants of The Journal, a true friend and mentor. All of us who worked in his shadow basked in his genius for innovation and creativity. He was second to none in his love and appreciation for the Green Sheet, and it bore his stamp of mischief, whimsy and good humor. He will live forever in our hearts.

Eileen: The SJNP just called with the very sad news. I can't believe we have lost George. He was such a vibrant, fascinating man with projects in the hopper to last a lifetime. We will miss having dinner with him, but we still have YOU. Jim and I join the thousands who are mourning this terrible loss. Goodbye George and God speed.
