McCarthy, Michael W. "Mike", retired Brigadier General, USAF, born July 31, 1936 in Shorewood, WI passed away on All Soul's Day, November 2, 2013. Mike lived a colorful and varied life; from public service and private practice to Grand Canyon river rafting (21 times), softball and golfing until his death. In high school, he was on the Wisconsin state debate and oratory championships, which produced numerous college scholarships. A graduate of Lake Forest College in Illinois, he excelled and earned the college's premiere acknowledgment: membership in Iron Key. Working 30 hours per week, he nonetheless graduated from University of Wisconsin law school and was commissioned in the US Air Force, serving active and reserve for over 30 years, at which 3 years were served at Luke AFB, Arizona. Mike was known as the creator of a training program that eliminated distinction between active and reserve Judge Advocates (military lawyers), he served as Senior Reserve JAG at Strategic Air Command, Air Training Command and Air Mobility Command, then was called to serve as reserve counterpart to the USAF Deputy Judge Advocate General. At retirement, Air Combat Command renamed its annual outstanding reserve JAG award in his name. Mike left active duty in 1966, followed by service as partner in several law firms, while also serving as a Judge Pro Tem in the Maricopa County Superior Court. He was also an initial member of the Arizona Court of Military Appeals. In his later years, he was regarded nationally as one of the experts in military pension law and was published in several articles. Throughout the entirety of his post-law school days, Mike was blessed with the support of his Wife of 51 1/2 years, Ann Hickey McCarthy. He is also survived by their children: John Francis (Col.USAFR), Michele Albo, Eryn (Lupe) and Salina Faaborg, as well as their grandchildren: Kaitlyn, Kyle and Alena McCarthy in MD; Kurt and Miranda Albo, Anna and Helena Sallas and Ashling Faaborg in AZ and his brother-in-law, John Hickey. He was a man of integrity and his greatest accomplishment was being a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He will forever be known as a true Irishman with the gift of gab and a contagious laugh. His wit and sense of humor were larger than life. Visitation will be held Wednesday, November 6, 2013 from 5pm to 8pm at Shadow Mountain Mortuary, 2350 E. Greenway Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85022. Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 7, 2013 at 10am at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 11001 N. 40th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85028. Graveside Service with Military Honors will follow at St. Francis Cemetery, 2033 N. 48th Street, Phoenix.
