Anita R. Nieves Obituary
Nieves, Anita R.
94, of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away on March 18, 2016. Anita (Tia Nene or Tia Nita) was born in 1922 to Domingo Nieves and Catalina Reamon in Camalig, Albay, Philippines, youngest of eleven children. Shortly after she entered nursing school in Manila in 1941, the Japanese invaded the Philippines. At Philippines General Hospital Anita cared for her patients under very dangerous conditions during the Japanese occupation. In 1946 she first came to the U.S. as a nurse for the McNealy family in Indiana, with whom she remained friends throughout her life. In 1947 she returned for a short time to the Philippines, later migrating to American territory at the Guam General Hospital, and finally obtained a permanent nursing position in Chicago in 1950. Anita was a pediatric nurse in the University of Illinois hospital from 1954-1984, when she retired. She then moved to Phoenix, where she lived out her retirement. There she joined the Bautista, Fallis, Furlong, McAdams, Rafallo, Regalario and Zaragoza families as a greatly cherished surrogate grandmother and great aunt. A world traveler, she visited many places all over the world, as well as visiting friends in Las Vegas, NV, and in Washington State, especially dear friend Genevieve Hawk. Her grandniece Mechelle Mill, from Texas, visited Anita every year, as well. Anita was a parishioner at Saints Simon and Jude Cathedral. Rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m. at Saints Simon and Jude Cathedral 6351 N. 27th Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85017 on March 29, 2016 with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow immediately at Saint Francis Catholic Cemetery at 2033 North 48th St., Phoenix, AZ. Condolences may be made online at www.queenofheavencatholicmortuary.com. Arrangements entrusted to Queen of Heaven Catholic Funeral Home.
