McAvay, Bernard "Bernie" Donald
82 of Scottsdale, Arizona passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home, on January 26, 2016 after a long term illness. Bernie was born on September 4, 1933 in New Britain, CT to Bernard Vincent McAvay and Mary Hayden McAvay, both deceased. Bernie is survived by his two sisters, Mrs. Ann Matteis of New Hartford, CT and Mrs. Mary Ellen Smith of Niantic, CT, along with nieces, nephews, cousins and many other family members and friends. Bernard was preceded in death by his wife of over 25 years, Mrs. Dorothy "Dottie" Louise McAvay. Bernie was a graduate of The Salisbury School and Morse Business School. For 46 years he was employed by Spring And Buckley Inc., becoming a partner for the last 25 years with William A. Hayden. For many years Bernie and Dottie were Snow Birds to Arizona. They lived in Farmington, CT during summer months and Scottsdale, Arizona during the winter. Bernie's hobby in life was golfing. He was a member of Desert Forest Country Club of Scottsdale, Arizona for over 25 years. He was a faithful contributor to many city, state and nation wide relief organizations. Bernie also served his country for two years in the United States Army. Bernie was a faithful member and supporter of Our Lady of Joy Catholic Church, Scottsdale, Arizona, where he attended each Saturday until his health made him unable to attend. Memorial service will be held on Saturday January 30, 2016 at 11:00 at Messinger Mortuaries located at 8555 E. Pinnacle Peak Road, Scottsdale, Arizona 85255, (480) 502-3378, Bernie will return home to New Britain, CT where funeral services will be held. Bernie will join his parents Bernard V. McAvay and Mary Hayden McAvay and his first wife Mrs. Harriett McAvay, at the St. Mary's Cemetery in the family plot.
