Betsy Elaine Martin Obituary
Martin, Betsy Elaine
our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, mother in law, and friend, passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning hours of September 16, 2015, at her home in Scottsdale, Arizona. She was 91 years old. Betsy was preceded in death in 2001 by her husband of almost 57 years, Charles E. (Chuck) Martin. Betsy was born on July 1, 1924 in Columbus, Indiana to Charles Ernest and Mary Leota (Moreton) Rogers. Her brother Bob, born in 1921, passed away in 1982 after a lengthy illness. She grew up in Columbus and attended and graduated from Columbus High School before attaining her Associate of Arts degree from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. Thereafter she worked as a secretary at Cummins Engine Company in Columbus where she met Chuck. She and Chuck were married in Columbus on May 21, 1944. Son Gregory was born in 1947 and daughter Vicki in 1949. The family always resided in Columbus except for a relatively short period of time when in Atlanta, Georgia until it's move to Scottsdale in 1968 when Chuck became the Cummins Engine Company distributor for Arizona and other parts of the Southwest and Sonora, Mexico. Betsy, in addition to the loving compassion and care that she always gave to her family, was a wonderful friend to many in Columbus, in Arizona, and elsewhere. Her bright and cheery smile and her ever-present optimism and good nature has been an inspiration to many. She enjoyed her game of golf with Chuck and with her friends for years and she particularly treasured her many travels with Chuck throughout the world after he sold his business and retired in 1986. Betsy was admired and loved by all and will be greatly missed. In addition to Gregory and his wife Betsy and Vicki and her husband Richard (Cohen), Betsy is also survived by seven grandchildren, Stacey, Corby (Derek), Andrew (Tiare), Justin (Shelley), Aly (Zun), Melissa (Donnie), and Troy and twelve great grandchildren. To her children, grandchildren, their spouses, and great grandchildren, Betsy was fondly and lovingly known as Ema. A memorial service for Betsy will be at 11:00 am Friday, Oct. 9, 2015 at Messinger Pinnacle Peak Chapel, 8555 E. Pinnacle Peak Rd., Scottsdale, AZ 85255. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made to Prime Care Hospice 4225 W. Glendale Ave., A-200, Phoenix, Arizona 85051 and to the , 8125 N. 23rd Ave., Phoenix, Arizona 85021. Betsy's family wishes to extend a special thank you to the physicians, nurses, and staff who attended Betsy in these last few years and to the staffs at Scottsdale Healthcare Thompson Peak Hospital and Prime Care Hospice who exhibited such compassionate care for her in her last few weeks.
