Bill Krause Obituary
Krause, Bill
Bill Krause was born in Chicago, on January 8, 1932 and passed away on March 2, 2013. His mother was born in Austria; his father was born in America. But his father, who had Austrian heritage, went "home" to Austria to find his bride. He was raised Catholic, and while he was always spiritual, he traveled many spiritual roads, coming home to Catholicism for the last years of his life. Bill entered the Air Force at age 16, lying to get in, so that he could support his mother, after his father's passing. He flew combat missions in the Korean War, was decorated, and stayed in the military for 22 years. He was always involved in athletic activities and was selected as the outstanding sports official for United Kingdom Military sports, which he officiated in for five years (from 1964-69). After Bill retired from the military, he completed his bachelor's degree at University of Nebraska. Then he sold insurance for several years. But the military was always in his heart. Later, he moved from AZ to Alaska, and worked for the military as a civilian. He was Chief of Recreation at the Army's Recreation camp in Seward, Alaska. He lived in AK for many years, and after retiring again, moved back to AZ to be close to his eldest son. In AZ, he was actively involved in both VFW (Veteran of Foreign Wars) and the AZ Korean Veterans group. He was Commander of the VFW, and often on the board of both groups. At Christmas time, he made sure that the veterans who were in the AZ Vet Home always had gifts, even if it meant buying them out of his own pocket. He joined the Austrian Society of Arizona (ASofAZ) in 1993 and was Vice President from 1998 till 2007. Bill was very active in the ASofAZ to help at fund raising activities. He is survived by his youngest son, John, (Seattle), and many friends. A graveside service will be held on April 11th at 11:00am at the National Cemetery located at 23029 N. Cave Creek Road (Tatum & Cave Creek )
