Our amazing, loving, kind, sweet and generous mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away on January 23, 2016 at age 94. She is survived by Bruce and Jylann Kai; granddaughters Shannon Kai (David Thomas), Reghan Kai (Michael Morris) and Erin Kai-Decker; great-grandchildren Zander, Jackson, Katelyn, Tucker and Sawyer. She also leaves many loving nieces, nephews and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Mandville J. Kai (Manix) and son Mandville J. Kai Jr. (Jim). Charlene was born and raised in Plainview, Nebraska. She was a professional educator, starting her career at age 19 as a teacher in a one room school in rural Nebraska. Her career included teaching at schools in Nebraska, on the island of Guam, in Wisconsin, Indiana and overseas in Ankara Turkey. She retired as a Reading Specialist for the Omaha Public School System. Charlene earned her Bachelor's degree at Omaha University, Master's degree at the University of Indiana and reading specialist certification at the University of Nebraska. Charlene was an avid reader, ardent letter writer, accomplished bridge player and world traveler having visited forty-seven of the fifty states and more than twenty-five foreign countries. A memorial service celebrating Charlene's life will be at North Scottsdale United Methodist Church, 11735 N. Scottsdale, AZ 85254 on February 6, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Omaha, Nebraska.
