Charles J. "Charlie" Smith Obituary
Smith, Charles J. (Charlie)
passed away at the age of 93 on October 31, 2015. Charles was born in Chicago, IL in 1922, the oldest of five children. After the passing of his father in 1930, he moved to Phoenix where he would remain the rest of his life. On December 8th, 1941 the day after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the beginning of WW II, Charles joined the U.S. Navy where he would serve until 1945. His working life was with the Post Office from which he retired in 1977. Charlie's biggest claim to fame would be his newspaper collection that he started as a youth and grew to be one of the largest, most diversified private newspaper collections outside of the Smithsonian Institute. Survivors include his sister Frances Fusselman, daughter, Susan Hurtado, her husband Cas, grandsons Derek and Austin; and son Jimmy Barrow, his wife, Kelley; grandson Aaron, granddaughter Megan Ellerbe, her husband Brandon; and great-granddaughter Olivia. Memorial service will be held at Paradise Memorial Gardens, 9300 East Shea Blvd. in Scottsdale, AZ 85260 on Saturday, November 14, 2015 at 10:30am.
