Charles "Carlo" Veronda Obituary
Veronda, Charles "Carlo"
Charles "Carlo" Veronda died on July 24, 2016 after a ten year struggle with Parkinson's Disease. Born in Rock Springs, Wyoming on November 2, 1942, Carlo was the beloved son of Charles and Vernice Veronda. Seeking a warmer climate that would encourage Carlo to play outside most of the year, the family moved to Phoenix in 1945. As a young, skilled clarinetist, Carlo earned a full scholarship to USC and graduated in 1964 with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance. The following year, Carlo earned a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education. After serving as principal clarinetist for the Academy of the West Orchestra, Carlo began his studies at the University of Michigan where he was awarded a Master's Degree in Music. While earning a Master's Degree and subsequent Doctorate Degree, Carlo taught full time in the School of Music at the University of Michigan. Carlo's Doctorate was conferred in 1971, the same year he joined the faculty of Phoenix College as Director of Instrumental Music. In the years to follow, Carlo served as a Director of the Symphonette orchestra for twelve years, and Director of the Youth Orchestra for four years. Carlo was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to train young conductors to lead the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra. In the mid 1970's, Carlo became Director of the Phoenix College Community Orchestra, Director of the Phoenix College Community Concert Band and the founder of the Phoenix College Jazz Program. A master clarinetist, Carlo often performed as a soloist with local ensembles. For 30 years, Carlo was a member of the Arizona Band and Orchestra Association. He retired from teaching and conducting in 2005. Carlo is survived by his wife, Sylvia, son Juan (Diana) Veronda, daughter Angie (Tony) Barry, four beloved grandchildren, and a great-grandson.
