Lay, David Jerome
David Jerome Lay, age 97 passed away October 31, 2015 at his home in Camp Verde. He was born October 8, 1918 in Flagstaff Arizona. He was married on May 4, 1940 to Carmen Martin, who preceded her husband of 61 years of marriage, in death on April 3, 2001. Both were native Arizonans, born in Flagstaff and attended local schools in that city. He worked as a fire guard for the US Forest Service immediately following high school and then for Standard Stations in Blythe, Needles and Williams. Mr. Lay worked during World War II in the shipyards for Kaiser Shipbuilding as a combination certified pipe welder, welding the high pressure steam lines on the ships. The later on, as a civilian certified maritime welder, he built rockets for the Navy. He also served as a Coast Guard reserve in Alameda, California when not welding in the war effort. Returning to Flagstaff after the war, his wife purchased Lois' Beauty Salon which she operated for several years and he returned to work for his former employer, Babbitt Brothers Trading Co., where he advanced form carryout, to manager, to supervisor and then to divisional vice president of super market operations with markets located throughout northern Arizona. In addition he was past president of the Arizona Retail Grocers Association and a member of the Flagstaff Elks Lodge #499. He also held the Big Ten Award of Arizona, being #46 on that list. He and his wife, Carmen, were avid outdoor enthusiasts, enjoying the many opportunities that Arizona has to offer. Her trophy buffalo mount is on display for the public in the Flagstaff Game and Fish Office.He and His wife were Flagstaff residents until the early 1990s when the move to the Verde Valley because of her health. Survivors include his grandson David Jay Lay, of Glendale, his sister Mary Hunter of Queen Creek and former daughter-in-law Shirley Lay. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carmen and his son, David A. Lay. Funeral Services will take place Friday, November 6, 2015 at 10:00 am at Norvel Owens Mortuary, 914 E. Route 66, Flagstaff, AZ followed by burial in Citizens' Cemetery, Flagstaff, AZ. In lieu of flowers family request donations be made to Verde Valley Hospice in Cottonwood.
