David Lieberman Obituary

Lieberman, David
David Lieberman, age 83, passed away on Thursday, August 11, 2016 in Scottsdale, AZ surrounded by his adoring family. He was a larger than life figure who had an infinite zest for life, and a generous and open heart and spirit that was apparent to all who met him. David was the oldest child of Harold and Adele Lieberman, and was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He grew up in a beautiful old house on Lake Harriet, along with his brother Steve and his sister Sandy. David studied history at the University of Minnesota, where he met the love of his life, Sara Silverman, a brilliant and dazzling young woman from Chicago. In 1957, David and Sara were married, and they went on to raise four children in Minneapolis - Sam, Jonathan, Barbara and Michael. From the early 1960s through the mid-1980s, David joined forces with his father, his brother Steve and his brother-in-law Harold Okinow to build a successful family business - Lieberman Enterprises - one that continues to be run by his brother Steve and his sons Dan and Harold. David had a lifelong passion for music, so it was logical that within the family business, he focused on music distribution. Over the course of his career, he was loved and respected by music industry executives, retail moguls and famous music artists from all over the country. In the mid-80s, David and Sara started to spend winters in Scottsdale, and in the late 90's, they moved to the Valley on a year-round basis, where they became integral and active members of the community. Together, they were big supporters of the arts in the Phoenix area, including Scottsdale Center for the Arts, ASU Ceramic Research Center and The Heard Museum. Art, music, dance, opera - they loved doing it all together. After his retirement, David devoted a significant amount of time and energy as a volunteer teacher in the Phoenix area, including many years working with Jim Bailey at Tavan Elementary School - where, not surprisingly, he was a loving mentor to so many children. David especially adored his four beautiful grandchildren - Rebecca, Charlotte, Benjamin and Gabriella - and they adored their "Dubus" right back. He was also a fierce Scrabble and bridge player. David is survived by his wife Sara, his children Sam, Jonathan, Barbara and Michael, his daughters-in-law Lisa Kayne Lieberman and Jessie Washburne-Harris, his son-in-law Sam Askenazi, his grandchildren Rebecca, Charlotte, Benjamin and Gabriella, his brother Steve Lieberman, his sister-in-law Sheila Lieberman, sister Sandy Okinow and a large and loving extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins. David had a boundless supply of love for his family and friends, as a husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, cousin, employer, and friend. The world is a better place for his having been here, and he will be greatly missed. Services are on Sunday, August 14th at 1:00 pm at Temple Solel, 6805 E. McDonald Dr., Paradise Valley, AZ 85253. Arrangements by Sinai Mortuary.

Dear Sara
It is with great sadness for you and all your family that I recently learned of the passing of your dear husband David. You have both been such an inspirational support for the arts and for ceramics in particular and my thoughts are with you at this time. It must be wonderful to have had such a long and happy marriage and I know you will all miss him. very best wishes from London, UK, from Christie Brown.

Dear Sara, Steve, Sheila, Sandy & family,
I remember David so well especially going back to when I first met him as campers at Herzl Camp in the summer of 1948. He was always a fun & loving man. May your happy memories sustain you all doing this difficult time.
Thinking of you with Love,

Mr. Lieberman made a big impact on me as a child in Mr. Bailey's 3rd grade classroom at Navajo Elementary School in the early 90's. He truly did leave an amazing impact on everyone that crossed his path. I'm so sorry to hear of this loss to the world. I'm now 32 years old, and have never forgotten that huge smile and upbeat, booming voice sharing laughter and stories with us. Sending much strength and lots of love to his family and friends as they grieve for a beautiful soul. The world truly is a better place for having him in it.
