Diana Valenti Bower Obituary
Bower, Diana Valenti
Diana Valenti Bower, 66, passed away peacefully as her family surrounded her with love and light, at her home in Chandler, Arizona. She fought a brave and brief fight against brain cancer, and was taken from us on November 24, 2012.

Diana was born on August 31, 1946 in Detroit, MI to Jack & Helen Valenti. Her childhood was spent in Michigan growing up in Livonia and then Farmington (Class of 1964). Upon graduation from nursing school, Diana toured Europe where she met her first husband, Gerry Dawes, and they settled in Spain for several years. They left Spain for New York City where their daughters Erica and Elena were born. A move to Suffern, NY, where Maria was born, established a suburban setting with large backyards, beautiful trees, and roots for her family. Diana and Gerry parted ways and fate brought her to Arizona in 1998.

Her move out West resulted in a nursing position at the Carl T. Hayden VA Hospital. It was there she fell in love with Craig Bower. Their compatibility and careers in psychiatric nursing gave their relationship a special bond. They married in 2004 and never wavered in their love for each other in their happy 13 years together. Diana had a gifted eye and enjoyed photography. Gardening was a passion of hers, which she shared with Craig. Vacationing in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico brought them much joy, relaxation, and happiness.

Diana devoted her career to working with people with mental illness. Not only was she a skilled nurse with a strong work ethic, but her capacity to get along with even the most difficult individual often placed her in positions of management. She enjoyed a good book and hosting gatherings for her family. She always put others first and made those around her feel comfortable and welcomed in her home. Diana made an impressionable impact on those who knew her and her smile lit up a room. She was elegant in her often quiet and unassuming nature, intelligent without boasting, and compassionate. She had an innate wisdom and her advice was invaluable. Most of all, family was her primary focus and she was deeply devoted to them, as they were to her. Her grandchildren brought a special sense of joy and extra smiles.

Diana is survived by her loving husband, Craig Bower of Chandler, AZ; daughters Erica Messinger of Dolores, CO, Elena (Brandon) Pollard and Maria Dawes of Chandler, AZ; stepsons Jacob and Joseph Bower of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren Graham Messinger of Dolores, CO, Trace Pollard and Makayla Dawes of Phoenix, AZ; sisters Connie (John) Daenzer of Ann Arbor, MI and Linda Smith of Novi, MI; nieces and nephews; and friends in Arizona, New York, Michigan, Spain and around the world. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Diana will always be missed by those who knew and loved her, and her beautiful and giving spirit will be her legacy to family and friends forever. A Celebration of Diana's Life will be held at her home on Thursday, December 6th at 2:00 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to National Alliance on Mental Illness, P.O. Box 62596, Baltimore, MD 21264-2596.
