Stephenson, Donald (Don) Alfred
74 of Scottsdale Arizona passed away peacefully in his sleep. The family is accepting visitors on Saturday September 12th at his home from 3:00 - 6:00 pm. Donald was born in Salida, Colorado on September 2, 1941 to Dolly Pearl Scott and William Carroll Stephenson. He moved to Arizona with Dolly at a young age after she remarried Dr. Harold Donovan and was raised by them in Scottsdale, AZ where he graduated from Scottsdale High School in 1959. He attended New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, after receiving his bachelor degree in 1963 he attended graduate school at the University of Chicago and the University of Cambridge. Donald had a successful career in optical and quantum physics and was well respected for outstanding work and accomplishments. For the majority of his career, Donald lived in New York state and worked with Corning Glass Works, Eastman Kodak and ITT Industries. Throughout his career he received civilian medals of honor from the Department of the Navy for Distinguished Civilian Service and the Department of the Air Force for Civilian Achievement. He retired in 2008 from ITT Industries Space Systems Division. Throughout his life, Don was a mentor and inspiration to many people, especially within the LGBT community. He was a strong supporter of HIV research and long term survivor, blazing a trail for all to live with joy and Pride. In his free time, he enjoyed learning about science and technology, gardening and perhaps most, dancing. He enjoyed spending time with his dogs, taking them to hike and swim daily. He was well loved by many friends, family and neighbors and will be fondly remembered for touching the lives of those around him with his colorful exuberance for life. He is survived by his son Shawn Stephenson married to April D. Auman from Raleigh, NC and daughter, Hollace Stephenson from Charlotte, NC as well as his two golden doodles, Boson and Lepton.
