Hale, Donald Gilmer
94, of Scottsdale, passed on peacefully on Friday, January 15. Don spent 35 years as Director of Restoration at the Hall of Flame Museum of Firefighting in Phoenix. He was born July 27, 1921, and grew up primarily in California. He apprenticed under his grandfather, who designed period vehicles for Hollywood movies. Don served in the United States Army in World War II in New Guinea, where he was wounded in combat, and in the Philippines. He later served on the nuclear proving grounds in Nevada. Prior to his time at the Hall of Flame, Don spent thirty years with the San Luis Opisbo, CA, Fire Department, ultimately rising the the rank of Assistant Chief. Among his many other endeavors, was the design and construction of racing speedboats. Don is survived by his wife, Nancy, also of Scottsdale, his son Robert, of Carson City, Nevada, and many devoted friends and relations. Services will be held at 10AM, Saturday, January 30th, at Valley Presbyterian Church, 6947 E. McDonald Drive, in Paradise Valley. A reception will follow at the Hall of Flame Museum, 6101 East Van Buren in Phoenix. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Hall of Flame Museum appreciated.
