Thompson, Donald Joseph
Donald Joseph Thompson, 61, of Peoria, passed away on August 25, 2016 after a long illness. He was born in Loma Linda, California on June 24, 1955. He was a descendent of the first white settlers in Oak Creek Canyon. In 1973, he joined the Marine Corps in San Diego, California and served during the Vietnam War. He also served with the 114th Evacuation Hospital (Utah) during the Persian Gulf War. He served his country with honor and distinction. He enjoyed working in the National Parks. As a devout outdoor adventurer, he loved to rock climb all across the Southwest. He worked 17 years in the postal service. He graduated with a business degree from the University of Phoenix and a Master's degree from Chapman University. He was a skilled reading teacher at Barry Goldwater High School, where he made a difference in the lives of many students. He also taught at Grand Canyon University. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, of 36 years, sons Adam and Andrew, and six grandchildren. He was a wonderful mentor. He was always positive even during tough times. He was a fighter. He will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be held at Heritage Funeral Chapel, 6830 W. Thunderbird Rd., Peoria, on Tuesday, September 6 at 12:00pm, with visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow at Resthaven Park Cemetery in Glendale. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Donald's memory to the or the Phoenix Rescue Mission.
