Donald Reed "Donnie - Oatsie" Oates Obituary
Oates, Donald "Donnie"-"Oatsie" Reed
Donald Reed Oates born March 28, 1936 went to be with the Lord on August 30, 2015. Donnie was born and raised in Mesa Arizona along with his Brother Robert Avery Oates and Sister Barbara Oates Freeman to the Parents of Avery and May Skousen Oates. Donnie was very proud of his authentic American Pioneer heritage as a direct descendent of his great grandfather and western Pioneer James Niels Skousen. "Oatsie" was always very humorous, social and popular from the time he was a young man even until his final days. He was an accomplished athlete as a young man until he broke his back playing football for Mesa HS. After high school Donnie worked for the Fish and Game traveling Arizona on various game management projects many of which are still in existence today. Donnie was an entrepreneurial businessman involved in a variety of ventures, including owning a bar and managing a Nehi & Crush soda distributorship. Donnie's most well-known business was "Don Oates Auction House". The Don Oates Auction House started on south Robson Rd. in Mesa then relocated to the old landmark "Castle" building on 3640 Apache Trail in Mesa. Next Donnie moved his family to the White Mountains in 1970 where he again relocated Don Oates Auction to Show Low "on the curve of Hwy 260 toward Wagon Wheel". For the next 40+ years Donnie traded with the Indians, conducted various live auctions in the area and all around the state selling, trading and pawning everything from Indian collectables to merchandise, antiques, animals and real estate. A sign that was posted in his store for years... "Buying merchandise is like buying Oats, if you want good clean fresh oats, you should expect to pay a considerable price, if however you would like oats that has already been through the horse, you can expect to pay considerably less." Donnie was very active with the White Mountain Sheriff's Posse and was quite an accomplished hunter and fisherman to include everything from state records to well told tall tales. Donnie married Georga Lee Arnold in 1964 and is survived by 5 accomplished children which he loved very much - Thomas Edmond Allen Jr., Genell Dawson, Harry Albert Allen, Hugh Arnold Allen and Scott Skousen Oates, 13 grandchildren and 17 1/2 great grandchildren. This authentic old west personality will be greatly missed by all! Funeral arrangements are being handled by Meldrum Mortuary 52 N. McDonald, Mesa AZ 85201. Viewing Wednesday 9/3 at 6-8:00 pm, Services Thursday 9/3 at 11:00 am.
