Dorothy Marcelli Obituary
Marcelli, Dorothy (Vitale)
was welcomed into heaven on January 3, 2016. Dorothy was born in Dawson, New Mexico on February 12, 1918, the daughter of Angelina and Mike Zauhar. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Louis Vitale, husband Fred Marcelli, sisters Ann Lucero, Katherine Simpson, and infant Mary Zauhar. She is survived by her daughter Phyllis (Vitale) Schwartz, son-in-law Bob, granddaughter Erica, sister Tillie Christie, and many nieces and nephews. She attended cosmetology school in Chicago after high school and had her own salon in Dawson next to Louis' barber shop. In later years she became an accomplished artist, gifting many of her paintings to family and friends. Five years after the death of Louis in 1971, she married Fred Marcelli. They moved to Phoenix from Albuquerque in 1987 to be closer to her family, especially Erica. She loved caring for Erica even trying to teach her how to draw and paint…that was joyful to watch. Dorothy was a volunteer in the Adopted Grandparent Program at Hidden Hills Elementary School during the years Phyllis served as the principal. Dorothy lovingly worked with the children to improve their reading skills. Her second language of Croatian served her well when working with the Bosnian children that enrolled in the school. She loved to play bridge, canasta, read novels, and do crossword puzzles. She will be remembered as a kind, generous and optimistic woman. One of the sayings she often recited was, "Life is hard by the yard, by the inch it's a cinch." The family thanks the skilled staff at Pueblo Norte Healthcare Center for their loving care of Dorothy over the past ten years. She will be laid to rest in Albuquerque next to her high school sweetheart Louis. Donations may be made in her memory to Phoenix Children's Hospital, , or the . Rest in peace faithful servant. Arrangements by Messinger Indian School Mortuary, Scottsdale, AZ.
