Dorothy Totten Obituary
Totten, Dorothy
A long goodbye ended Saturday, January 2nd as our family said a final goodbye to a mother, friend and grandmother. We owe everything to a woman who always demanded our best yet asked for little for herself. Dorothy and her family relocated from Kansas to Scottsdale in 1960. She raised four children and touched the lives of thousands more as a teacher and administrator. A fixture for 30 years in the Scottsdale School District, Dorothy taught at Hopi, Pueblo, Mohave, Cocopah and Ingleside. She was most proud of her work as Principal at Cherokee Elementary, where she was affectionately called "Doc Tot." Dorothy received a B.A. in Elementary Education from Wichita State University, her M.A. From Arizona State University and her doctorate in Education Administration from Northern Arizona University. Never one to shirk responsibility, retirement was far from restful. She served as a volunteer and then volunteer services director at Scottsdale Healthcare, ran the Rose Lane Girls Club and was always there when a grandchild needed her. Dorothy is survived by her sister Doris Linehan; her daughter Gayle (Kurt) Holland, sons Greg (Nancy), Gary (Liz) and Grant Saunders; grandchildren Sean, Kristin and Jacci Holland, Sammi, Alexa and Mackenzie Saunders; and great-grandchildren Milena Holland and Maddyn Badalamenti. We are grateful to be the beneficiaries of her determination and sacrifice. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m, Friday, January 8th at Messinger Mortuary, 7601 E. Indian School. Internment will follow immediately at Paradise Gardens, 9300 E. Shea Blvd. A celebration will be held after internment. Thank you to all of the people who have shown her kindness over the years.
