Dr. Eileen Yellin Obituary
Yellin, Dr. Eileen
Dr. Eileen Yellin, 60, of Phoenix tragically passed away on July 22, 2016. Dr. Eileen Yellin was born to Bernard and Regina Yellin in 1956 at Fukuoka, Japan. Eileen attended UNM earning a B.Ed. in Special Education and an M.A. in Education, and ASU earning a Ph.D in Education and Justice Studies. Eileen moved to Phoenix, AZ and began teaching at Tempe High School in 1990. She worked tirelessly to serve the students in her Special and General Education classes. Eileen's natural ability for this calling was evident to all who worked with her and she served as an Adjunct Faculty member at MCC, ASU, and NAU. In addition to her work within the classroom, Eileen was known for her outspoken advocacy. She was a fervent champion for the rights of all and was the founder of the THS Stand and Serve Club, GSA, and was a member of GLSEN - receiving many awards and recognitions for her selfless service to others. She was known as a caring educator who was not only concerned with the academic successes of her students but mentored and cared for them to ensure personal successes. Known also for her sense of adventure, Eileen traveled the world. She loved to spend time with family and friends around the dinner table, on a hiking trail, or at civic events. With her retirement in the spring of 2016, she was already searching for her next adventure when her life was tragically cut short. She is survived by brothers, Michael (Colleen) and Jerry (Gisela); two nieces and two nephews, Elissa (Brian), Ian (Tamar), Patrick, and Shannon (Justin); and countless family and friends who will miss her warmth, love, smile, and laughter. In honor of Dr. Yellin's years of compassion for her students, THS is creating a scholarship in her name to ensure students have the opportunity to follow their dreams.
