Schafer, Eleanore "Ellie" Louise
99, of Scottsdale, AZ passed away on Sept. 17, 2016. She is survived by her nephews Edwin and Robert Avery and niece Eleanore Jane and their families. Ellie was born Jan. 18, 1917 in White Haven, PA to Robert and Letha Schafer. She graduated from West Chester State University. Ellie worked for the YWCA in Buffalo, Cleveland, Chicago and Philadelphia, before enrolling in Yale University's certification program in Alcoholism Studies. In 1954 she became Director of the Alcohol Information Center, in Bethlehem, PA. Ellie moved to Scottsdale in 1960 and soon established Phoenix's Alcohol Information Center (NCADD). In 1969 she joined St. Luke's Chemical Dependency Treatment Team, now St. Luke's Behavioral Health Center (IASIS) retiring 1987. She returned, working part-time, until felled by a stroke in 2013. Ellie's gift was empathy and she actively served her hospital, community and church. Ellie was a Valley Presbyterian Church elder and greeter, and worked with More Life Presbyterians and the Grand Canyon Presbytery. She served on the Arizona Board for Certification of Addiction Counselors (ABCAC) and co-founded the Southwestern School of Alcoholism Studies (SWS). She was active in supporting AA, Al-Anon, the Alzheimer's Association, Audubon, Chronic Fatigue Hotline, and Victims of Domestic Violence organizations. Ellie received numerous accolades including two Channel 12 Hon Kachinas, More Light Presbyterians' Rosemary Wallace Award, Grand Canyon Presbytery's Dr. George Benjamin Brooks Justice Human Rights Award, the National Council on Alcoholism and Addiction's (NCADD) Bronze Key, and both the Phoenix Business Journal and Arizona Business Magazines' Lifetime Achievement recognitions. In 2002, IASIS Healthcare granted her their Chairman's Award. In lieu of flowers send donations to The Crossroads treatment center or More Light Presbyterians. A celebration of Ellie's life will be held at Scottsdale Ranch Community Center 10585 N. 100th St. (at Shea Blvd.) Sunday, October 23, 1:30-4:30 pm.
