Ferdinandus (Nando) Jacobus Aloysius Schellen born in The Hague, The Netherlands, October 11, 1934, passed away in Phoenix, Arizona, March 28, 2916 after a brief illness. Nando was Managing Director and Associate General Director of The Netherlands Opera from 1969-86; directing assistant at Wagner Bayreuth Festival, Germany, General/Artistic Director of Indianapolis Opera. In 2000 Nando received an appointment as Director of Opera Theatre at Northern Arizona University, a position he held until his retirement in 2015. During his career he directed over seventy operas, musicals, operettas, in Europe, Canada, and the United States, including Arizona Opera. Nando is survived by his wife, Deborah Raymond, Associate Professor of voice at NAU, a sister, brother, son, three daughters, and four grandchildren in the Netherlands. Ongoing Nando Schellen Singer Awards have been established with the Metropolitan Opera National Council- Arizona Auditions and Northern Arizona University.
