Bagatell, Fillmore K.
Fillmore K. Bagatell, 84, passed away unexpectedly, yet peacefully, in his home on March 2, 2013. He was born in Brooklyn, New York to Sylvia and Edward Bagatell. As a youth, he developed a passion for world events and history, proudly serving as his high school's war map monitor during World War II. He received a bachelor's degree from the School of Agriculture at Cornell University, where he met and married Corinne Joy Fellerman in 1951. He earned a Master's Degree in Bacteriology from Iowa State University and then served as a lieutenant in the Quartermaster Corps during the Korean War. Fill went on to complete a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, an M.D. from Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and a medical residency in dermatology. During this time, Fill and Joy had six children, living first in Cleveland and then in New Jersey, where Fill worked in dermatological research at E.R. Squibb Inc. In 1973, Fill moved his family to Phoenix to join a dermatology practice. In 1993, he retired from medicine to travel the world and pursue his lifelong interest in history. He voraciously read history tomes, and his family called him a "walking history encyclopedia." Fill treasured his Jewish heritage; he served as the Ritual Committee Chair at Beth El Congregation and later was a regular attendee at the New Shul. His greatest delights were the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 62 years, Joy, his children Carrie, Sharon, Nancy, Dan, and Rochelle Bagatell, his sons-in-law Peter Smith, Dennis Hoffarth, Don Holmes, Bob Berg, his daughter-in-law Annie Gelb, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at Beth El Cemetery, 2300 W. Van Buren St. in Phoenix on Tuesday, March 5, at 10:30 a.m. Friends wishing to honor Fill's memory may make a donation to the National Holocaust Museum or the Jewish Foundation for the Righteous. Arrangements by Sinai Mortuary.
