Dr. Friedrich Karl Straub Obituary
Straub, Dr. Friedrich Karl
Friedrich Karl Straub died Sept. 5, 2016 of pancreatic cancer. He was born July 6, 1951 in Gifhorn, Germany. Friedrich graduated summa cum lauda, with a Masters in Mechanical Engineering from University of Hannover, Germany in 1975. From there, he received a scholarship to attend the University of California, Los Angeles. There Friedrich earned his PhD in Aerospace Engineering in 1980 and started working for Hugh's Helicopters in Culver City, CA. Then, along with many colleagues, he moved to Mesa in 1985 and has been working for Boeing ever since. Friedrich had an outstanding career as a researcher and manager spanning 36 years. He was an engineer's engineer, a technical giant in the field. He co-authored several patents, presented dozens of papers at national and international technical conferences and has published several papers in technical journals. Among the many honors he has received during his stellar career at Boeing were the prestigious Fellow Award from American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) in 2014 and American Helicopter Society (AHS) Technical Fellow Award in 2015. Despite his many career achievements he always remained modest and unassuming. He was a great colleague and friend to his co-workers. Outside of work he felt equally compassionate toward his family and greater circle of friends. Friedrich and Ulrike enjoyed 30 years of marriage. He was a devoted and loving father to his sons Eric and Michael and was a wonderful role model for them. He loved his family life from small everyday things to action-filled family adventures such as national and international travels and many scouting trips. Friedrich always gave 100% to all aspects in his life. This was evident in everything that he did. He was an enthusiastic out-doors-man, who loved challenging hikes and was an exceptional, beautiful to watch, skier. Friedrich was preceded in death by his son Michael, mother Emilie, and father Ernst Straub. He is survived by his wife Ulrike, son Eric, soon to be daughter-in-law Erika, her son Jacob, sister Ilse (Klaus), niece Anja, nephew Ralf (Melissa), and "adopted grandmother" Jean. In lieu of flowers, his family suggests donations to the Friedrich Karl Straub Memorial Scholarship Fund set up by the Arizona Chapter of American Helicopter Society (AHS). Please visit ahsaz.org/scholarships/. Aufwiedersehen Friedrich! We all love you dearly. You will be greatly missed, and never forgotten.
