Campbell, Garald L., D.P.M.
70, of Tempe, died Monday, March 28th, 2016, at Banner Desert Medical Center. Dr. Campbell spent his career serving patients in the greater Phoenix area and educating health care providers on a local and national level. Gary Campbell was born on May 19, 1945, to Alexander and Joyce Campbell. He was raised in Detroit, and graduated from Denby High School and Wayne State University. He entered the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine in 1967, and developed a life-long passion for medicine and caring for patients. Gary married Nadine Wycinsky on August 30, 1969, in Detroit. They moved to Tempe in 1972 to open Gary's podiatry practice and start a family. They were a special couple, with a shared interest in medicine. In over 40 years of practicing podiatry in the Mesa / Tempe area, Gary served in many community capacities, made numerous contributions to the art of practicing medicine, and touched many lives. Gary was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1996 and fought a valiant fight to live a normal life. He was passionate about sharing his experiences and contributing to Parkinson's research to understand and cure the disease. His ultimate goal was to help other patients sustain their quality of life. Gary and Nadine were research activists and served with Parkinson's Action Network, appearing several times on behalf of the organization in front of lawmakers in Washington, D. C. Gary's commitment to his patients and colleagues drove him to work until he could no longer deliver a quality service. He retired in 2013. Gary had a delightful sense of humor and was known to his family, friends, colleagues, residents, nurses, and patients as a compassionate, caring man. Survivors include his three children, Andrea Helderman (Burke), Colleen Campbell, and Scott Campbell (Angela); two grandchildren, Daniel and Cole Helderman; his sister Bonnie Wojtaszak (Greg); his niece Kim Sherlock (Brian) and her 3 boys; and his mother Joyce Campbell. He was preceded in death by his wife and father. Services will be held at King of Glory Lutheran Church on Saturday, April 16, 2016, at 10:30 am.
