Guinn, Gene
Gene Guinn passed away on February 11, 2016 at the age of 87 in Mesa, AZ. He was born in Prairie Grove, AR to Ethel Frances and John Sherman Guinn. Gene joined the U.S. Army in 1946 and served one year in Kyushu, Japan. When he left the Army, he enrolled in the College of Agriculture at the University of Arkansas where he completed his BS degree in Agriculture. He later went on to graduate school and ultimately obtained his PhD in Plant Physiology from Texas A&M University. He worked for the USDA as a research scientist focusing his work on cotton research. In 1970, he received a transfer at work which brought him to the Western Cotton Research Lab in Phoenix, AZ where he remained for the rest of his career. Gene enjoyed many outdoor activities such as hiking, camping and outdoor photography. He was also an accomplished wood worker and enjoyed that work up until the final days of his life. He was a very compassionate and giving man who gave generously to those in need. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary; son, David (Sandy) of Gilbert, AZ and daughter Nancy of Tempe, AZ and grandchildren: Justin (Brooklynn), Fort Collins, Colorado, Shane (Jaeda), Shawn (Mandie), and Shyla, Gilbert, AZ. He is preceded in death by brother, Foy Guinn; by parents, Ethyl Frances and John Sherman Guinn; by sister, Virgie Opal Meyer; and by brother, Earl Leon Guinn. He will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him. Visitation will be held on February 19, 2016 from 10-11am, followed by a Celebration of Life ceremony at Green Acres Mortuary & Cemetery, Scottsdale, AZ.
