George A. Pillmore Obituary
Pillmore, George A.
of Scottsdale, AZ, was welcomed into the kingdom of Heaven on March 21, 2016, surrounded by family members. He was 92 years old. Please join the family for a memorial service at 930 am on Saturday, March 26, at Paradise Memorial Gardens, 9300 E. Shea, Scottsdale. Reception to immediately follow at Manor Village, 9160 E. Desert Cove, Scottsdale. George was born on November 25, 1923, in Alamosa, CO, the second of four sons to Edison and Martha (Conkey) Pillmore. George grew up in Boulder, CO, and graduated from the University of Colorado with a Bachelor's Degree in electrical engineering. During this time, he was also commissioned as a Naval Officer. He was called to serve, in 1944, as the XO (Executive Officer) aboard LCT 614, as part of the second wave of the D-Day assault on Omaha Beach. His first time taking command of a Navy ship, at age 20, was pushing away from the dock at the south of England for the cross-channel transit to Normandy. George met the love of his life, Mary Leach, in 1950, on a blind date, in Schenectady, NY. They were married on May 13, 1951, in Loudonville, NY. George worked in engineering, marketing, and sourcing for General Electric, Honeywell, and Arizona Public Service from 1947 until his retirement in 1990. In 2004, in recognition of his service during the D-Day invasion, George was humbled when he was one of fifty U.S. military veterans to receive the French Legion of Honor medal. This is France's highest military award. It was given to him as part of a joint ceremony with President Bush and President Chirac, at the U.S. cemetery on the Normandy coast. The ceremony commemorated the 60th anniversary of the invasion. George was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be sorely missed. He was preceded in death by Mary, his loving wife of 58 years, his parents, and two brothers, Donald and Charles. He is survived by two sons, Chris Pillmore and Eric Pillmore (Pamela), a daughter, Kerry Fiske (Stephen); his brother Richard; seven grandchildren (Brian Pillmore (Micah), Sarah Pillmore-Prescod (Garvin), Justin Pillmore (Rebekah), Heather Roberts (Jake), Chelsea Swanson (Brandon), Mari Pillmore and Nathan Pillmore; and five great grandchildren, Elijah Pillmore, Malachi Pillmore, Esli Pillmore, Sophia Prescod and Gideon Pillmore.
