Gavan, Geraldine N.
Geraldine Natalie "Gerry" Gavan. June 24, 1921-August 15, 2016. Gerry passed away with her family by her side on August 15, 2016. She joins her son Tom Gavan in the presence of the Lord who died one day earlier on August 14, 2016; both succumbed to cancer. She was also predeceased by her brother Robert Sichterman and her great grandson Jonah Anspach. She is survived by her loving husband of 71 years Charles T. "Chuck" Gavan and her six surviving children: Charles P. "Chuck" Gavan, Mary Gavan, Bill Gavan (Elizabeth), Anne Gavan, Mark Gavan (Margaret) and Paula Gullick (David) and her son Tom's surviving wife Jessie Gavan. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. Gerry was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on June 24, 1921 to Gertrude and Harry Sichterman. She attended St. James Catholic School and Catholic Central High School in Grand Rapids where she was the 1938 Homecoming Queen. After high school she worked for the law firm of Dilley and Dilley and then for American Seating Company during WWII when the company was dedicated to making chairs for the military. During this time she belonged to the USO and loved attending their dances. She met her husband Chuck on a family vacation to Traverse City, Michigan in 1944. They were married in 1945 and raised their children in Grand Rapids until moving to Phoenix, Arizona in 1962. She stayed home raising their kids before starting a career with the State Compensation Fund in Phoenix in 1968. She went on to work for the law firm of Lewis and Roca before retiring in 1987. Gerry was a very spiritual person who had an unwavering faith in God. She belonged to SS. Simon & Jude Cathedral Parish for over 50 years and was a very active volunteer in the Cathedral's St Vincent DePaul Pantry, serving as secretary for many years. She was a loving wife and simply the best mom, grandma, great grandma and great-great grandma that anyone could ever have. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., August 24, 2016 at SS. Simon & Jude Cathedral, 6351 North 27th Avenue followed by a reception at the Cathedral. Burial will follow at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, 2033 N. 48th Street in Phoenix. Memorial donations to St. Vincent DePaul Society would be preferred in lieu of flowers. Please visit www.almoore-grimshaw.com for condolences.
