Shirley, Haruko (Suyama)
85, of Scottsdale, AZ passed away on May 7, 2016. She was born on March 5, 1931 in Tokyo, Japan to Seiji and Nobu Suyama. Haruko was working in the U.S. Air Force BX when Paul met her. They married and had a daughter. In 1962, they moved to Phoenix, AZ and then to Tempe, AZ. Haruko became a U.S. citizen in 1986. In 1992, after Paul retired early from Motorola, they bought a farm in Hettick, IL. She loved farm life, especially caring for their pigs. In 1994, they moved to Scottsdale, AZ. Haruko was a very friendly, caring, kind, and generous person. She was known to many as the "Avon Lady" in her Tempe and Scottsdale neighborhood. She enjoyed shopping, bowling, BINGO, and watching Arizona sports on TV. Haruko will be deeply missed by her family, friends and all who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister in Japan. She is survived by Paul Shirley, husband of 56 yrs; daughter Debra Gerlach; grandson Stephen (CeCe) Gerlach; great-grandchildren Faith, Stephen, and Karmen; one brother and three sisters in Japan; nieces and nephews in the U.S. and Japan. A private memorial with family was held.
