1921 - 2015 Obituary Condolences
Helen Maureen Grant Obituary
Grant, Helen Maureen Linehan
94, of Phoenix, AZ, passed away peacefully on the morning of September 1, 2015. As a close family friend said, "Helen spent her entire life waiting to go to heaven, and she certainly is there now." Helen was born in Lynn, MA, on April 29, 1921, the middle of three children of Jeremiah Linehan and Sadie Sumner. In 1942, she graduated from the School of Nursing at Lynn City Hospital, where she met the love of her life and husband of 61 years, Austin R. Grant, M.D., who preceded her in death in 2004. Helen and Austin first moved to Phoenix in 1950 and together created a large and beautiful family. Helen was a faith-filled, independent-minded person of tolerance (even before the word was politically correct) who, in addition to teaching her children countless life lessons, volunteered for years as the manager at the Marian Shop at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and at the Heard Museum. The family would like to thank the caregivers at The Terraces and Banner Hospice for tending to Helen in her final days. Helen is survived by her sons, Richard Grant, M.D. and his wife, Sherrie, David Grant and his wife, Lisa, and Jerry Grant and his wife Kim; her daughters, Sally Cohen and her husband Ellis (deceased), Mary Avina and her husband Albert, Meg Grant and her husband Greg Lecklitner, and Christine Grant and her wife Lu Ann Robinson; 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. A rosary will be held at Whitney Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 E. Indian School Rd., Phoenix, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3, with visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 4715 N. Central Ave., Phoenix, on Friday, Sept. 4, at 2 p.m., followed by a private burial. Arrangements are by Whitney Murphy Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Francis Xavier Parish's The Master's Plan or the Loyola Academy at Brophy College Preparatory.
