Hawley, Hugh B. Jr.
Known for his great sense of humor and passion for life, beloved husband and father, Hugh B. Hawley, Jr., 81, passed away April 21, 2013, in Litchfield Park, AZ. Hugh loved his wife and family, watching football and fighting bad guys. He was strong, courageous and very funny. Born on January 19,1932 in Sherman, TX to Pauline & Hugh Hawley. The Hawley family moved to Los Angeles where he was a star football player in high school & Valley Jr. College in North Hollywood. Hugh joined the US Marines in 1950, trained at Camp Pendleton as part of the 1st Marines, 1st Division, 1st Battalion, B Company. Along with 75,000 troops under the command of General Douglas MacArthur, he was part of the amphibious landing at Inchon, a pivotal battle in the Korean War. After returning from Korea, he sold patio awnings for the family company in Los Angeles & married Mary Helen Roberts on October 10, 1953. They had 4 children: Hugh III, Laura, Carol (deceased), Richard. In 1958 the family moved to Phoenix; Hugh began a career in law enforcement, serving as a Phoenix Police officer from the late 1950's until 1968 when he transferred to the State Dept of Narcotics which was absorbed into the newly formed AZ Dept of Public Safety. In 1975 as a Training Instructor he was promoted to Sergeant; Hugh traveled around the state teaching the basic "280 hour Academy". He retired from Criminal Investigations in 1982. In 1986 Hugh and Mary relocated to Cholla Bay, Mexico. Rum & Coke in hand, Hugh reined as President of the Old Boy's Social Club, fished off the Maria Elena and generally enjoyed the fun and sun of Mexico with his family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Helen, his children: Hugh III, Laura, Richard & grandchildren: Nevin Parrish, Stephanie Folgeson, Jessica Hawley, Ashley and Teale Walheim, Richard Jr., Hannah, Troi Hawley; his sister, Anne Harrison. An Honor Guard Memorial will be held: May 11, 2013 at 11:00 am; American Legion Hall: 6822 N. 57th Ave, Glendale.
