Schoen, James Edward
76 of Mesa, passed away on 9/25/2015. Jim was born on August 4, 1939, the younger of 2 children to Edward Herman and Emma Jane (Hix) Schoen in East St. Louis, IL. At a young age he moved to a farmhouse in Gillespie, IL and attended 1st through 5th grades in a one-room country schoolhouse taught by his mother Emma. He graduated from Gillespie High School in 1956 and was a member of the band and chorus. After working briefly for McDonald Douglass he started college at Southern Illinois University where he met Ruth Elizabeth Huller on a blind date. They wed on July 20, 1959 in Carbondale, IL. Jim earned his bachelor's degree in economics from SIU in 1961 and soon after they moved to Arizona where he earned his advanced degree from the American Institute of Foreign Trade in Glendale. In 1962, he began work at Motorola eventually joining their International Department. Throughout his 35-year career, he traveled to South America, Central America, Canada, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. In 1970 he took his family with him to live in South Africa for a year. Retiring at age 57, he continued traveling around the globe with his wife and friends. He loved playing bridge and family activities, planning many family vacations with his children and grandchildren. An avid sports fan, his favorite teams were the Dallas Cowboys, the D-Backs and the Suns. He and his wife have been members of St. Bridget Catholic Church in Mesa since its inception and have served together as greeters and Eucharistic ministers. They also volunteered for the St. Vincent DePaul Society. James is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ruth Elizabeth Schoen; daughter Rochelle (James) Burt; sons Stephen (Jeanette), Jeffrey (Sharon), and Scott; sister Nancy (Jim) Emahiser; 13 grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. A Gathering will be held on Friday, October 2, from 6-8pm at Mariposa Gardens Memorial Park. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday Oct 3 at 10:00 am at St. Bridget Catholic Church, 2213 N Lindsay Rd, Mesa, AZ 85213. Mariposa Gardens is in care of arrangements. Remembrances may be made to St. Vincent DePaul Society, St. Bridget Conference at 2213 North Lindsay Rd. Mesa, AZ 85213.
