James Langford "Lanny" Westbrook

1938 - 2016 Obituary Condolences
Westbrook, James Langford "Lanny"
James Langford (Lanny) Westbrook passed away October 21, 2016 in Phoenix, AZ. He was born on September 30, 1938 in Faulk, AR. He is survived by his wife Shirley Rae Westbrook, daughter Linda Rae (Paul Silvagni), half-brother Mike Girard of Phoenix, AZ and half-siblings Lucille Kennmer and Phil Westbrook of Shreveport, LA. His son Wymer preceded him in death in 2013. Lanny was a 1963 Arizona State College (NAU) graduate where he excelled in football and wrestling. In 2007 he was inducted into the NAU athletic hall of fame for his accomplishments. A fierce competitor, Lanny was a member of the U.S.A judo team and competed in the 1967 Pan-Am games winning a silver medal. Chess was another passion and he loved to play with one and all. He had a love for learning and earned two master degrees and a Ph.D. in Public Administration from Golden Gate University. Lanny led a lifetime of service; he was a U.S. Marine and an Oakland, CA police officer, keeping the peace through the turbulent late 1960's and achieving the rank of Lieutenant in 1977. Lanny was a professor in Police Science and wrestling coach at NAU from 1978-1984; he left to fulfill a dream of cattle ranching in Eastern Oregon. Lanny and Shirley operated the ZW ranch for 26 years living alongside the John Day River until returning to Phoenix in 2010. Lanny was a devoted family man, he loved his wife and kids and spent many weekends on outings, cutting wood, picnics at Lockett Meadow, and making ice cream. He was full of fun, stories, laughter and love. He had many friends and loved ones in the Flagstaff, Bay area, and Oregon communities and held them dear through the years. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Huntington's Association at www.HDSA.org.
