James Russell Mize Obituary
Mize, James Russell
90, passed away peacefully Monday, April 11, 2016 after a five-year battle with heart disease. He was born September 11, 1925 in Bunker Hill, Illinois. He was preceded in death by both of his wives, Dolores Mize of 30 years and Norma Mize of 14 years and his brother Reid Mize. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Ruth Ann Mize of Bunker Hill, Illinois, her four children Carla (Pastor Peter) Kirby, Marla (Ken) Ray, Peggy (Rusty) Graham, and Eldon (Shari) Mize, along with five great-nieces and two great-nephews and one great-great-niece and one great-great-nephew. He was a loving step-father of four children Mark, Mike, Sandi and David. He was a loving grandfather of Brandon, Leslie, Laura, Raymond, Aaron, Aric, Adam, Andrew, Michael and Katelyn. He was also blessed with seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Russ grew up in Bunker Hill, Illinois until he was inducted into the Army in 1950 and served in the Korean War for two years in the 8226th Communications GHQ Long Lines Signal Group, Signal Service Co #3. During that time he was promoted to Corporal and earned the Korean Service Medal with a silver star, the United Nations Korean Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and two overseas bars. Upon discharge, Russ perfected his skills in cabinet making. He met his first wife Dolores at the Rose Bowl and married her in 1961. They moved to Arizona in 1969. After 30 years of cabinet making, he retired and started doing marquetry and perfected his skills to earn several awards for his creations in wood. Russ was a longtime member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church of Phoenix where he served as an elder, usher and in many other capacities. He became a widower at the age of 65 and remained single until 5 years later when he met his next wife Norma Metelski at church. She gave him her beautiful sweet smile and he was smitten. They enjoyed a wonderful marriage of 14 years as they came to know that life begins at 70. Russ was a devoted husband and loving caregiver to both his first wife, Dolores, as she struggled with cancer and his second wife, Norma, as she struggled with Alzheimer's. Russ will be sorely missed by all. Those who knew and loved him are comforted by the knowledge that he is at peace and at home with his God.
