Jean Girst Clement Obituary
Clement, Jean Girst
age 89, of Winchester, Virginia, died peacefully, surrounded by her family at Blue Ridge Hospice on Wednesday, June 8, 2016. Jean was born in Royal Oak, Michigan on September 16, 1926, the daughter of Edna and Lyman Girst. She attended Waterford High School in Waterford, Michigan through the tenth grade, when, as was the local school system tradition, she transferred to Clarkston High School for eleventh and twelfth grades. It was here, in 1942 that she met the love of her life, William H. Clement. She graduated from high school in 1944 and enrolled at Michigan State University. In 1947, she married William, and they were together for almost sixty-nine years. She graduated from Michigan State in 1948 with a degree in both Business Administration and Education. She and William remained generous supporters of Michigan State University for almost seventy years. After college, she taught at Grand Ledge High School in Grand Ledge, Michigan, and at Troy High School in Troy, Michigan, before devoting herself to raising a family. After moving to Winchester, Virginia in 1971, she became an active member of the First Presbyterian Church. She was a long time member of the Women's Auxiliary at what was then Winchester Hospital, holding several offices, including proudly serving as its President. Throughout her life, her most important role, and the one she enjoyed the most was wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She always put her family before herself. She received great joy and satisfaction from being an important part of her family and helping it to grow and thrive. She was preceded in death by her brother, Lyman Girst, Jr., and by her infant granddaughter, Emily. She is survived by her husband of nearly sixty-nine years, William H. Clement. Also surviving her is her daughter Nancie Garth of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Nancie's daughter Sarah Tullo and husband Vinny and their daughters Avery and Riley, of Earlysville, Virginia, and Nancie's daughter Katie Leach and her husband JJ and their children Jack, Hudson, Elsie, and the newest member of the family, Annabel, of Bumpass, Virginia. Also surviving are her son Richard and his wife Phyllis, of Paradise Valley, Arizona and their children Nicholas, and his fiancee Molly Mateus, of Santa Monica, California, and Christopher, of Phoenix, Arizona, and Kimberly Gilmore, and her husband Matt, and their son Noah, of Wilmette, Illinois. She was an amazing woman and she will be greatly missed. A funeral service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, June 11, 2016, with the Reverend Elizabeth Lewis officiating, with burial to follow at Mt. Hebron Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Jones Funeral Home on Friday, June 10, 2016 from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. Our family would like to thank the staff at Blue Ridge Hospice for their care and compassion through a difficult time. Jean was comfortable and at peace during her time there and we are grateful for their efforts. Memorial contributions may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice of Winchester, Virginia.
