Jesse Ivan Nelson Obituary
Nelson, Jesse Ivan
Jesse I. Nelson, age 95, peacefully passed away on May 25, 2016 at home with his family beside him. He was a warm and loving man with a contagiously buoyant personality. He grew up dirt poor in Central Illinois, the son of a farm hand. He met future wife Harriet in high school and soon went off to war. He used the GI Bill to go to the University of Iowa and started working for Standard Oil the day after graduation. With immaculate planning, and after raising 3 kids, Jess retired at age 55 so he and Harriet could travel. And travel they did, using a motor home or Airstream trailer to see 49 states, Canada, and all of Central America. He loved traveling and traveled internationally well into his 90's. Jess lived at Brookdale's Springs Mesa, for many years where he grew to love the staff. It brought him great joy when they returned that love ten-fold. With this wonderful care he was able to stay just where he loved and he was loved, passing peacefully at home with family. Yes, he was a very good man. Survivors include a son, James (Randy) and spouse Rose, son in law Clifford Manning, five grandchildren and their spouses: Todd and Deb Manning from Topeka, KS, Tim Manning and Lori Hanson from Lawrence, KS, Paige and B.J. Stansifer from Wichita, KS, Scott Sanders and Dawn Admire-Sanders from Florrisant, CO, and Leah and Steve Freed from Chapel Hill, NC. There are 10 great grandchildren: Daniel and Nathan Manning, Aidin, and Eliot Manning, Trey and Arya Stansifer, Lyra and Ryder Sanders, and Daniel and Zoey Freed. He was preceded in death by spouse Harriet (McVay) Nelson, and daughters Rebecca Manning and Susan Sanders. Services will be held at 11:00am Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at The Brookdale Springs Mesa, 6220 E. Broadway Rd., Mesa, AZ 85206
