Joan Shields Obituary
Shields, Joan Lewis
87, of Scottsdale passed away on December 13, 2015. Joan Lewis Shields, also known as GG to her loved ones, passed in her sleep of natural causes December 13, 2015. Joan was born on April 23, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY and grew up in Rome, NY. She attended Duke University where she majored in English, which she later taught. She was involved in Summer Stock Theater, musicals, dancing and singing. She also had her own radio talk show in the 50's. Joan moved to Arizona in 1969 and worked with the John Gardiner Tennis Ranch, Elizabeth Arden's Maine Chance Spa & Retreat and following her love of baseball, worked at the Pink Pony in Old Town Scottsdale until its closing. Her devotion to animals led to her involvement with, and co-founding of, the Arizona Animal Welfare League where she worked tirelessly with the rescue and care of animals. She found enjoyment in watching major league baseball (Yankees) and Broadway musicals. She loved Frank Sinatra, whom she stood in line for over six hours one time just to meet! More than anything though, she loved and was committed to her family. She is survived by her son, Michael Hoffman, daughter, Robin Porter (John Porter), grandsons, Mark Sweeney (Carrie Ceckanowicz Sweeney), Casey Mercer and great-grandson, Devin Mercer. A celebration of Joan's life will be held at a future date and will be posted in the Arizona Republic.
