Urquhart, LTC. John Cheney
Ret. US Army. November 1, 1936 - January 24, 2016. John passed away unexpectedly at age 79 on Sunday, January 24, 2016 in Reno, Nevada. A resident of Seattle, Washington, John was born and spent his youth in Kemmerer, Wyoming, moving with his family to Phoenix, Arizona while a teenager. John's strong work ethic had its origins in his experience delivering The Arizona Republic on his bicycle. The second son of Sarah Mae Cheney Urquhart and Donald Urquhart, both deceased, John's surviving sibilings include Donald (Ludene) of Colorado and sister LaRue (Ted) Czajkowski of Washington. During numerous tours of duty in VietNam, John developed expertise in the fields of aviation, public relations and military intelligence. his lifetime affiliation with military and civil service work enhanced his appreciation of the people of different cultures, culinary delights of other countries, and his favorite, shopping opportunities. His lifelong passion for travel was ignited at an early age while serving a two-year mission for the LDS Church in the United Kingdom and Scotland. The highlight of his military career was to serve as Commander of the Aviation Detachment in the divided city of Berlin. Duties included flying sercurity along the Berlin wall and providing VIP orientation flights to senators, generals, and European ambassadors. He also spent extensive time facilitating U.S. Army purchase of aircraft in Switzerland. Military assignments motivated travel throughout the world, including Asia, South America, Germany, Hawaii and many locations in the U.S. Retiring from the Army as a LTC in 1987, John was actively employed with the Federal Aviation Administration for many years. Survivors include daughter Valerie Urquhart Trim (Maryland), daughter Marya Renee Urquhart (Laveen, Arizona) and son John Eric Urquhart, of Glendale. Arizona; four grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews, friends and acquaintances throughout the world. A graveside memorial service for inurnment will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, February 12, 2016 at Greenwood Memory Lawn Cemetery, 719 North 27th Avenue, Phoenix, Arizona 85009.
