Messer, John Eugene
80 died peacefully on September 9. He was born on March 1, 1936 in Waterloo, Iowa. He graduated from Orange Township High School and went on to receive his Bachelor's degree from the University of Northern Iowa. He married Carolynn Timmer in the Fredsville Lutheran Church, Cedar Fall, IA in 1959. He continued his education with a Master's from University of Arizona and a Doctorate from Arizona State University. He was an administrator in the Maricopa County Junior College District for thirty years. He served his community by participating on various local, state, and national committees. He was also involved with his local Kiwanis Club on McCormick Ranch and the Ascension Lutheran Church. John was an avid sports fan and enjoyed going back to visit family and friends in Iowa. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carolynn, daughter Cheri (Teresa) Hodges of Scottsdale, AZ, son Steve Messer of San Diego, CA, step-grandchildren Tricia and Bryce Wilcox of Casa Grande, AZ, sister-in-law Hazel Messer of Cedar Falls, IA, three nieces and two nephews. His parents, Vernon and Ruth Messer, his bother Robert Messer, son-in-law Frank Hodges preceded him in death. John's family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to the staff of and Barton House. Visitation services will be held at Messinger Indian School Mortuary on Wednesday, September 14th from 6:00pm - 8:00pm. Memorial services to be held at Ascension Lutheran Church on Friday, September 16th at 10:00am with a light lunch following the service. Memorials may be directed to the John Messer Scholarship Fund at Scottsdale Community College (480.423.6424)
