John George Lemnitzer Obituary
Lemnitzer, John George
John George Lemnitzer was born, November 21, 1943 to Fred and Mary Lemnitzer in New York City, New York He was baptized at St. Peter's Lutheran Church Manhattan, New York City, Confirmed at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Portland Oregon. Ordained and served at First Lutheran Church Tacoma, WA. He also served as pastor at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Missoula MT, Bethel Lutheran Church, Los Angeles, CA., Mt. Carmel Lutheran Church, San Luis Obispo CA., and the Bethel Lutheran Church in Phoenix, AZ. He was called home, October 12, 2015, in Phoenix AZ. John was 71 years old. John was intense, determined, focused and passionate in everything he did. John was a prophet/priest in his ministry and was always leading his people to see the world as it was, broken, battered and in need of God's redeeming love. John was bigger than life and yet he was also a fragile child of God. His ministry involved protesting the war in Vietnam, protesting the proliferation of nuclear weapons, hunger, poverty, The Iraq war, and conditions in Haiti. John was always the voice for the voiceless. John's name is on dozens of case law concerning civil disobedience in our country. He is remembered as a champion for underdogs. There is no way to know how far reaching his influence has become. John is survived by his children, Jonathan and Allison Lemnitzer, brothers Fred and Eric both of Phoenix, and sister Deborah Flores (David) of Portland OR. A Celebration of his life will be held at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 1500 W. Maryland Ave. Phoenix, AZ on, Saturday October 24, at 11:00. In lieu of flowers please consider making a contribution to either, HeartwithHaiti.org (John served on the Board of Directors there); or Lutheran World Hunger or another .
