John Joseph Kovanic was born in Westville, IL on July 26, 1924, the son of Thomas Kovanic Sr. and Elizabeth (Bitto). He died on July 30, 2016 in Phoenix, AZ. John and his brother, Thomas, owned and operated a Sunoco Service Station and a used car business in Westville, IL. Upon retirement John moved to Phoenix, AZ, and married Anne Stefaniak in 1989. They shared a love of travel and took joy in visiting places both domestic and abroad. John served in the Navy during World War II and in the Korean Conflict. During his Word War II service he crossed the Atlantic in a LCI landing craft and returned from overseas on the Queen Mary. He was honorably discharged. Due to his military service he was awarded an Honor Flight trip for WWII Veterans to the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC with his stepson Mike. John was a member of SS. Simon and Jude Cathedral in Phoenix, AZ and the American Legion Post 51 in Westville, IL. He loved a good round of golf, cracking jokes, solving crossword puzzles, and jingling his keys when he was ready to go. John was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Betty Harlow, and brother Thomas Jr. and great-step grandson Oliver Stimple. His second wife, Anne Stefaniak Kovanic, passed away 20 days prior to John's passing. John is survived by two nieces Paula Renfroe and Nancy Grimes, great-niece and nephews Andy Renfroe, Emily Renfroe, and Thomas Grimes. He is also survived by step-children Mike (Ann) Stefaniak, Cheryl (Stephen) Cotten; step-grandchildren Heather (Steven) Stimple, Lindsey (Mathew) Olson, Scott (Melissa) Stefaniak; great-step-grandchildren Reece Olson, Stella Olson, Elijah Stimple, Isaiah Stimple, Xavier Stimple, Aiden Stimple, and Steven "Kainoa" Stimple.
