Benton, Josiah Henry
79, of Mesa, AZ passed away on July 10, 2016. Joe was born on his family farm in Malvern, Iowa to Hurlburt J. Benton and Mildred Church Benton. It was there, along side his father, that he began his lifelong bond with farming. His family moved to Mesa, AZ while Joe was in middle school. He graduated from Mesa High School. Joe attended Peru State College in Peru, Nebraska and later took classes at ASU in Tempe, Arizona. In 1960, Joe entered the U.S. Army Corps, serving for 2 years. Joe explored many other career roads. He obtained a contractor's license and built custom homes. He also obtained a realtor's license. Eventually, Joe's path took him back to farming the land where he grew up. Joe was an avid traveler and explored many parts of the world. His love of history, travel, reading and films made for some great adventures and conversations. Joe's nature endeared him to those who knew him well. His family and friends will miss his kind heart and gentle spirit. Joe is survived by his cousins; Kay Church Vandenberg (Bert), Jeanette Church Bower (Ron), Jean Church Lightle (the late Frank), Raburn Benton (Dixie), Eleanor Benton Hoover (Bill), Roger Benton (Kathy) and other extended family. Memorials suggested to: The Malvern Public Library, 502 Main St., Malvern, IA 51551 or Malvern Community Student Loan Fund, P.O.Box 120, Malvern, IA 51551. A private family gathering will be held in Iowa.
