Julia Heald McGee Obituary
McGee, Julia Heald
Julia Heald McGee passed away August 6, 2016 at age 94. Born in Powell, Wyoming, to Edward Paul and Marguerite Painter Heald, she grew up on her parents' Trail Creek Ranch near Cody, Wyoming. She attended the University of Montana, but withdrew to marry Carl F. McGee, a military intelligence analyst, and moved with him to Washington, D.C. Upon Carl's discharge the young couple lived in Wyoming, Montana and New Mexico before settling in Ray, Arizona. In addition to raising a family Julia taught piano and provided musical accompaniment to children performing traditional Mexican dances in Sonora, Arizona. With the encouragement of her dear friend, Ruth Coffey, Julia returned to college, completing bachelors and master's degrees at ASU. She then taught first grade in Kearny, Arizona for 19 years before retiring in 1984 and moving to Tucson. Following Carl's death in 1993, Julia moved to Gilbert to be closer to family. Julia spent her final months in the tender care of Najwa and Sammy at Five Star Assisted Living in Tempe. Julia loved reading and travel. Whether Aristophanes, Shakespeare, Dick Francis or Tony Hillerman, she devoured it all. In retirement, she travelled to the places where these things were written. She was pre-deceased by her parents, her sister Evelyn, Carl, her husband of 50 years, and Franz and Mimosa, her beloved dachshunds. She is survived by a sister, Marguerite Phillips of Campbell, California and sons Edward (Sandra) of Phoenix and Donald (Kim) of Houston, Texas, daughter Amanda (Michael Welch) of Gilbert, 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Services have been held.
